Social action is at the heart of our faith, and is central to the Peninsula Temple Sholom community.
Mitzvah Day 2018!
Through PTS’ Social Action programs, our members:
- Express gratitude for our blessings and fulfill our moral responsibilities by helping others
- Meet and connect with other PTS community members
- Do meaningful work
- Teach (our children) important Jewish values
- Model righteous behavior for others (and bring them along with us)
- Make PTS and Jews relevant to our greater community
Here are some of the Social Action activities at PTS. They are appropriate for adults & children of all ages and abilities. Which of them would you like to learn more about or get involved with?
Home and Hope – We provide a warm and welcoming temporary home for homeless families from San Mateo County for 3-4 weeks throughout the year. PTS members provide dinner, play with the children, chaperone overnight and perform other tasks to host our Home and Hope guests while they shelter at PTS. Mitzvah Garden – We grow organic produce to benefit our nutritionally-deprived neighbors. Our Religious School’s Mitzvah Chefs use this healthful produce (which some students also help grow) to prepare meals for needy families associated with Jewish Family & Children’s Services. We also donate part of our harvest to local families through CALL Primrose Food Pantry.
High Holy Day Food Drive – Members drop off non-perishables that benefit our neighbors through CALL Primrose Food Pantry and Jewish Family & Children’s Services.
Jewish Coalition for Literacy – PTS adults and teenagers tutor elementary school children in their local schools to improve their reading and open them to the wonderful world of books. Administered through the Jewish Community Relations Counsel.
