A message from the Education Director

Passover, A Great Time to Celebrate with Families

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to discuss the Ve’ahavtah prayer with one of our 6th grade students. We talked about the prayer’s text and when I asked her about the meaning she perfectly articulated that we are commended to love God because he brought us out of Egypt and freed the people of Israel. She was right. The text focuses on this important fact. Moreover, the prayer also commends us to pass down the tradition to our children.

These two notions are also Passover’s main tradition. We celebrate together with our families the holiday of freedom (Chag Cheruteinu) and tell the story to the next generation. I have memories from my childhood celebrating Pesach with relatives, eating the food and listening to the Hagadah stories. One of the most remembered Passover Seder was at my great grandma house in Haifa. She hosted in her back yard my grandmother’s nine siblings, their children and grandchildren. A crowd of more than 100 relatives, representing four generations, set together to fulfill the mitzvot of the holiday. I recall the loud singing of Dayenu of all the great-grandchildren and the amazing warm spring weather. A great experience as a child.

At PTS Religious School we teach the story of the exodus from Egypt and educate the next generation about God’s miracles and the traditions of Pesach. However, like my vivid memories from my childhood, I believe that the family seder has a greater impact on the child’s Passover experience. I wish you all a wonderful Passover Seder.

Mission

As a Reform synagogue we are firmly rooted in Jewish tradition. We are committed to guiding students on a lifelong journey to explore their Jewish identities and find meaningful ways to bring Judaism into contemporary life.

Guiding Principles

- We believe our children need and deserve to acquire Jewish knowledge so they are prepared for their lives as Jews. This body of knowledge includes: Torah and sacred texts, the Jewish lifecycle and holidays, the broader Jewish community, Israel and Hebrew language.

- We believe that teaching Jewish ethics and values and debating their real-life applications prepares students to make good decisions and live meaningful lives.

- We believe that teaching and experiencing prayer, ritual, tradition and Jewish culture enables students to form personal connections with the Jewish faith and develop their own spirituality.

- We believe that Israel is a central feature of modern Jewish life, and that we should strive to inspire students to care deeply about Israel - the land and its people.

- We believe that by providing students with opportunities to establish relationships with the broader Jewish community we will cultivate their identification with the entirety of the Jewish people.

- We believe that fostering strong relationships between Jewish youth is a key to developing a strong Jewish community.

- We believe that when fun and joy are integral components of the Jewish learning experience, then a love for Jewish learning is developed and sustained over the passage of time.
