Providing Shelter for Homeless Families

Home and Hope is a cornerstone of the Social Action program at Peninsula Temple Sholom. It brings together congregants from all age groups, interests and abilities to provide shelter and comfort for homeless families from San Mateo County.

Home and Hope is a non-profit organization based in Burlingame that provides food, shelter, case management, and mentoring to homeless families through a paid professional staff in partnership with a volunteer, interfaith network of religious institutions that provide overnight shelter and meals at their sites. Families rotate among member congregations throughout the year; PTS hosts several times each year for a week or two at a time.

Family homelessness in San Mateo County is a significant, though often invisible, problem. Every year, roughly 6,000 people in the county become homeless, the vast majority of whom are families with children. Home and Hope operates for about $38/day per client and has about a 90% success rate in helping families to get back on their feet and transitioning them into housing.

If you would like to join with us when we next host Home and Hope families, please contact the Home and Hope team at homehope@sholom.org. Consider volunteering for any of the following:

• Set-up and/or Take-down - Adults and children
• Dinner Crew - Adults and children
• Overnight Chaperones - Adults or 16+ with a parent
• Food Coordinator - Adult
• Laundry (at week's end) - Adult

For more information about Home and Hope at PTS or any PTS Social Action effort, please contact the Home and Hope team at homehope@sholom.org. Monetary donations are always welcome (please write Home and Hope on the memo line of your check to PTS).
